Media Engagement Manager
About this Role
Help put Humanists Australia on the map. As our volunteer Media Engagement Manager, you'll work to raise HA's public profile by building relationships with media outlets, newspapers, and journalists, and by crafting stories that get humanist perspectives into the public conversation. You'll help ensure that people living compassionate, ethical, and fulfilling lives without religion see their views reflected and respected in mainstream media, all from home, with flexible hours that fit around your life. Working alongside a warm, collaborative team and reporting to the CEO, you'll gain real not-for-profit and media relations experience, free HA membership, and references to help you land your dream job. Objectives
Increase HA's visibility and coverage in mainstream and independent media
Build lasting, productive relationships with journalists and media outlets
Position HA as a trusted, go-to voice on humanist and non-religious perspectives in the news
Key duties
Write articles, opinion pieces, and press releases to pitch to media outlets
Identify and build relationships with journalists, editors, and producers at newspapers, radio, TV, and online outlets
Monitor the news for stories where a humanist perspective could add value, and pitch timely commentary or op-eds
Prepare HA spokespeople with talking points and background information for media opportunities
Track media coverage and outcomes, providing statistics for monthly board reports
Work with the CEO and other team members to align media strategy with HA's broader goals and campaigns
Contribute ideas about media opportunities and public messaging in online discussions with other team members
Skills and qualities required
Strong written communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and persuasively for a media audience
Confident, proactive relationship-builder, comfortable reaching out to journalists and outlets
Good news sense and an understanding of what makes a story pitchable
Good technical skills. Our technical stack includes Zoom, GSuite (Google Drive and Gmail), and Slack for instant messaging. Training will be provided as required.
