World Humanist Day: The Future of Humanism in Australia

Australia feels more divided than it should. Political tribalism, culture wars, misinformation, rising distrust. It can seem like we've lost the ability to sit down together and talk about what actually matters: how we treat each other, how we make decisions, and what kind of society we want to build.

If that frustrates you, you're not alone. And you might already be a humanist, even if you've never used the word.

Humanism is the idea that we can build a good society through reason, empathy, and a shared commitment to human dignity, without needing to agree on everything else first. It's a tradition that stretches back centuries, and in Australia today it's growing, because more people are looking for exactly that kind of common ground.

This World Humanist Day, we're opening up a conversation that matters: what should the future of Humanism in Australia look like?

This isn't a lecture. It's a genuine, participatory discussion. You'll hear a short framing to set the scene, then spend most of the event in small-group conversations with other people who share your values, exploring questions like:

  • What role should Humanism play in Australian public life?

  • What issues should the humanist movement be championing right now?

  • How do we reach the millions of Australians who hold humanist values but don't know it yet?

Your ideas won't just stay in the room. The insights from every table will be collected and fed directly to the leadership of Humanists Australia to help shape the direction of the movement going forward.

You don't need to be a member. You don't need to have all the answers. You just need to care about building a more thoughtful, compassionate, and rational Australia, and be willing to spend an evening talking about how we get there.
