Climate Change and the Environment

Standing up for our planet

Humanists find wonder in the natural world, and we value and respect our planet and all the life it supports.

We do not believe in a god or supernatural force that will solve the world’s problems. We believe it is up to humans to find the solutions that can lead to a sustainable existence. We rely on science and evidence to shape how we best look after our planet.

Humanists naturally have concern for the environment not only because we understand that the earth’s resources are finite and we must conserve them, but because we care for all human beings who live here, including those yet to come.

Humanist and distinguished scientist Sir Hermann Bondi said it best when asked why he cared about conservation, stating ‘I want my grandchildren to see elephants.’

What we’re doing

Humanists Australia works to promote and sustain our ecosystem and reduce the environmental impacts of our industrial processes and resource consumption.

Here at HA, we celebrate each and every individual action taken by you to save the climate, you are all doing your bit!

However long lasting change needs both individual behaviour change and large scale policies. This is why we also lobby MPs and larger corporations for meaningful commitments around net-zero targets, divestment from fossil fuels, and waste reduction. We need to find rational ways, in response to the findings of science, to conserve resources and make sustainable decisions for our planet’s future.

Climate Council Petition

Humanists Australia proudly support the Climate Council and their initiatives.

On 18 September, the Federal Government set Australia’s 2035 climate target: A 62-70% cut to climate pollution based on 2005 levels.

The lower end of this target falls dangerously short of what’s needed to protect Australians and our way of life. In the face of catastrophic risks, this is too timid for the times.

The top end of this range (70%) is closer to what’s needed to protect Australians and a bigger step up in effort – if it’s backed up by strong policies, credible plans and genuine investment.

Australians want decisive action. Now’s the time to push the Government to ensure 70% is a floor, not a ceiling.

Let’s go! Call on the Government to power past its 2035 climate target.
